I was 15 yards to the left of the plaque after my drive and I hit a 16 degree utility club. I usually hit that club about 210-220 and I was short. If I had to guess I'd say Hogan was about 220-230 out from the green when he hit that 1 iron. That is assuming that the green is in the same place today that it was in 1950.

As someone who caddied there for a bit I will comment that the hard fairways and greens are meant to be like that, Apparently that is the what the true links are like.

This is a great story and gives a very clear picture of what this place is really like. I, have played the entire Top 100, but I completed the 2002 list and this was not on it at the time-- but I would love to go there. I wrote a book about my quest and the website is above.

I agree that Tom Fazio is the best golf course deigner out there today and I love his work and I am sure I would love it here

Great blog! I just got back from a MI trip and found Arcadia Bluffs to be a blast. Next time you need to find a way to make it a little further up the road to Crystal Downs...it's just about as good as it gets.

ps- I think my best drive of the day was into the lake on #12 tee.

Steve,
Nice post on Bayonne Golf Club. I played Bayonne GC in an outing 2 days prior to your experience with a mutual acquaintance of ours (TSD). The course is indeed unique! The views are amazing and the links setup is such a contrast to what lies less than a driver from some of the holes. I found the course very difficult, partly due to a lackluster caddy providing little direction but mostly because I was playing really poorly. A second opportunity to play it would no doubt result in a better outcome. I found that the fairways and greens were incredibly hard, like playing off of cement possibly due to the silt? The wind is apparently a constant at BGC making the course that much more difficult.

I enjoyed the clubhouse more than the golf course. The BGC website reports that the flag pole is the tallest on the East coast. The top of the lighthouse provides quite a 360 view. Great locker room with great showers and great food. The bar area and terrace is also a great spot to hang out and take in the view. There is a boat from Manhattan to the course that runs on the half hour during the times where that is in demand.
Again, enjoyed your post on this course. Well put!
Thanks,
CD

Well Philly Cricket, the old course is on my list of courses i want to play and havent. I've had drinks there and it looks beautiful.

Not sure if you know this yet but they opened a new 18 called the Militia Hill Course on Butler pike. Beautiful piece of property but I must say wasnt that impressed with it, it lacked the character of the old style ones like the original Philly Cricket. Of course that's relative, it's a really nice course..

It suffers only by comparison - there are an awful lot of good courses right around there. Manufacturers is one of my favorites and I also like Whitemarsh Valley. Good Irish Club, nice golf course, great club atmosphere, really nice people.

Good luck getting on Merion. You really have to know someone, but trust me, it's worth it.

I dont think making a fortune and getting lots of new players is on Merion's list of priorities.

Hey, lucky devil you! What time of year were you able to play merion? Im a Philly native growing up in the Chestnut Hill area playing
most of my junior golf at Philly Cricket. I live in Hilton Head Island now. It's sad they (merion) dont offer a lottery to play there once
a year, I think they would make a fortune, not that they really need the cash or attention.

Any strategies for possibly getting in a round in off peak hours? Ha Ha..
